Fender Serial Number Decoder

Fender Serial Number Decoder has been developed by enthusiasts to provide a fast and convenient method for decoding guitar serial numbers. And it’s in NO way affiliated with the Fender brand.

The decoder supports various formats, including MIA, MIJ, CIJ, MIM, MIK and MII, encompassing a total of 15 groups and over 70 different serial number variations. You can check out any Fender guitar model: Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jaguar, Mustang, Precision Bass, Jazz Bass and others.

How To Use?

  1. Enter the serial number without any spaces exactly as it appears.
    • Include any letters and prefixes (for example: MN, Z, JV, etc.). Don’t remove leading zeros.
    • Avoid extra characters. Don’t add words like Made in…, model names, or other markings. Only the serial.
    • Try the number both ways (if it’s unclear).

  1. Click the Check” button. If the result does not appear immediately, just wait a little, no need to click again.

  1. You will see the year your guitar was made, the country and the factory where it was produced. If your serial fits more than one possible date/origin, the decoder will give you all matching options, not just one guess.

Not Found?

If the decoder can’t match your serial number, or the result looks wrong, it doesn’t automatically mean the guitar is fake. Use this quick checklist:

  1. Double-check the Format
    • Remove spaces and symbols (like: ‘-‘, ‘/‘, ‘#‘, etc.)
    • Recheck confusing characters
      • 0 (zero) vs O (letter O)
      • 1 vs I
      • 5 vs S
    • Make sure you included any prefix letters (like MN, MZ, JV, etc.)
  2. Confirm the Brand
Many guiatrs that look like Fender are actually Squier, and they often use different serial formats.
  3. Check the Neck Heel (Vintage Instruments)
For some vintage instruments, serial numbers alone may not give an exact date. The most reliable confirmation can come from neck heel date stamps.
  4. Check the Pots
Another option for dating your guitar is the potentiometer codes. Until 1963, Fender primarily used Stackpole potentiometers, after which they switched to CTS.
  5. Still Unsure? Contact Us.

FAQ

How is this decoder different from the one on the official Fender website?

Fender’s own lookup doesn’t contain every serial number (even Fender mentions that), and a lot of older or special serial numbers won’t show up there.

Not found = fake?

No. Not found can mean: the serial format is uncommon, it’s a reissue/special run, or parts got swapped (neck/neck plate). Serial numbers are helpful, but they’re not the whole story.

How accurate is the serial number decoder?

Fender used overlapping serial schemes and sometimes decals/plates don’t line up neatly with the build date. Best results come from combining serial + features + neck/body dates (and sometimes pot codes).

Is your tool affiliated with Fender?

No. This is a fan-built lookup tool made by enthusiasts. For Fender’s official database, use their official serial lookup site. But the problem is, they don’t have all the data. So we collected additional information from various sources and created our own tool.

After checking, I got two results. Which one should I believe?

Any of the options is possible. To find out this, use additional characteristics of the instrument (model, appearance, electronics, etc.).

What does ‘Production number’ mean?

It’s basically the sequence part of your serial (the running number inside that format). It doesn’t mean Fender made only that many guitars, it’s just a piece of the serial pattern.

Can the decoder tell the exact model?

No, it’s almost impossible to determine the model by the serial number (except for the first Stratocasters and some other guitars).

Do you store my serial number when I use the tool?

No, the serial is used only to generate the result. The decoder does not store information on the numbers that were entered into it. So, we don’t save, publish or share user-submitted serial number.
